This course provides a thorough introduction to the construction industry, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience to develop essential skills across various trades. Students will explore plastering, bricklaying, carpentry & joinery and painting & decorating, and general building techniques while gaining practical experience with tools and equipment. The course also covers health and safety protocols and emphasizes effective communication skills for collaborating with colleagues, supervisors, and clients. Work placements offer real-world exposure, allowing students to apply their learning in construction settings and gain valuable industry insights.
GCSE grade 9-1 (A*-F) in English or an ESOL Entry 3 qualification. You will also need GCSE grade 9-1 (A*-F) in maths.
Equivalence of these qualifications will be considered. Evidence of a commitment to learn and the ability to study at this level shown at interview.
Students will engage in both theoretical and practical tasks, covering essential areas such as health and safety, construction trades, and employability skills. Health and safety training focuses on understanding safety protocols and regulations in construction. In construction trades, students will develop basic skills in carpentry, bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating, wall and floor tiling, electrical work, and plumbing. Employability skills are also emphasized, helping students enhance communication, teamwork, and personal development relevant to the construction environment.
The curriculum is structured in phases, each focusing on specific trade areas. Phase 1 covers generic units, bricklaying, and joinery. Phase 2 expands into wall and floor tiling, construction operations, and painting and decorating. Phase 3 is dedicated exclusively to carpentry. Finally, Phase 4 introduces students to more specialized trades, such as plastering, plumbing, and electrical work.
Upon completion of this course, students can progress onto a Level 1 programme for more specialized construction training, or gain practical experience. These options help enhance skills and employability. The course also provides pathways to further vocational courses, allowing students to specialize in areas like carpentry, plumbing, electrical work.The students will be well-prepared for the next step in their construction career.
Assessment involves practical assignments and written tasks, evaluating both theoretical understanding and hands-on skills. Continuous assessment ensures that learners receive timely feedback to support their development.
