On Monday year 1 students from Croydon College Level 3 BTEC in Uniformed Public Services visited the Houses of Parliament as part of their Government and Policies studies unit. The students had a tour of the houses of parliament during which they watched the “Speakers Procession” that starts the week of business in the House of Commons and then sat in on a debate on benefit reform where questions were being put to the Minister for the Department of Work and Pensions, Amber Rudd.
Following this, the students took part in a workshop where they debated a bill using parliamentary rules.
Students were then able to meet the MP for Croydon Central, the Rt Hon Sarah Jones, who explained her role as an MP and how she decided to run for office and entered parliament. Students impressed staff and Ms Jones with their knowledge of parliamentary procedure and current affairs and asked some probing questions about the redevelopment of Croydon Town Centre and Crime in Croydon.
