Apprenticeship Funding and Incentives Explained
If you are an employer who does not pay the apprenticeship levy, or you are a levy-paying employer without sufficient funds, you are required to contribute 5% of your apprentice’s training and assessment costs. The government will cover the remaining 95%. Payments are made directly to us, with a payment schedule agreed upon. From 1 April 2024, employers who do not pay the levy will have the full cost of apprenticeship training funded by the government. This applies to apprentices starting their training who are: Aged 16 to 21 years old (or 15 if their 16th birthday falls between the last Friday of June and 31 August). Aged 22 to 24 years old, provided they: Have an education, health and care plan (EHCP) from their local authority, or Have been in the care of their local authority, and their employer has fewer than 50 employees.
For apprenticeships starting before 31 March 2024, employers with fewer than 50 employees who do not pay the levy will have the full cost of training funded if their apprentice is:
- Aged 16 to 18 years old (or 15 if their 16th birthday falls between the last Friday of June and 31 August),
- Aged 19 to 24 years old and either: Has an education healthcare plan (EHCP) from their local authority,
- Has been in the care of their local authority.
Additionally, employers who do not pay the levy and employ can claim a £1,000 incentive payment from the government. This incentive also applies to apprentices aged 19-24 who were previously in care or have a local authority education, health and care plan.
