Business Administrator Level 3 apprentice, Sharon Chesworth, shared with us her experience of studying an apprenticeship at Croydon College.

Hi Sharon, what have learned from doing an apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship has helped me to develop skills and knowledge that I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise. Through this opportunity, I have made some great connections that will serve beyond the workplace, and I have developed a great level of resilience and maturity. Some of the skills I have learnt are communication, technology, attention to detail, written skills, time management, minute taking, problem solving (many employers will ask questions about your ability to problem-solve during an interview), data analysis, supervising, delegation and team working. I have also learned organization skills, general administration, customer service, planning and research skills, resourcefulness, budget management and social media management.

How was experience at Croydon College?

I really enjoyed my time at Croydon College. I felt safe at the college and my amazing tutors cared about me and my continued progression. I was well supported by my tutors and understood the importance of my qualification for progressing onto the next level. Engaging lessons throughout, making use of blended learning strategies and involving learners accessing materials remotely. Purposeful and effective SMART targets are regularly on MyPT, with detailed follow up in progress reviews.

I have developed my literacy and numeracy skills, as well as digital literacy. I understood the intent of the curriculum and the reason for topics being studied in Business Administration so that it gives me a competitive edge and the best possible chances for continued progression.

I was aware of the grades needed to pass and what steps I needed to take to achieve them. Engaging activities throughout the college, showing enthusiasm and I wanted to continue learning through the encouragement of my tutor; constant feedback being given across summative and formative assessments, in progress reviews and via discussions. Student Support Services are tailored to meet individual needs.

How was your tutor?

My tutor Michaela is very kind, helpful, knowledgeable, encouraging and supportive. She is also very patient. I had a lot of personal problems outside of college and felt at times maybe I could not complete the course. It was through regular talks, in person or on the phone, reviews, and regular check-ins that I managed to pass. Michaela was always available to ask advice and help when needed. If I ever come back to Croydon College, I would hope Michaela would be my tutor again. I could not have made it through without her guidance. Thank you so much; forever grateful.

What advice would you give to future students?

Anyone who wants to learn and do courses should come to Croydon College. It is very well structured with lots of support available online or in person. Classes are very informative and helpful. You are always aware of what is expected of you and the timetable to follow. You will never be lost or left not knowing what to do next. So friendly too. Give it a try!
