Mode of study:
2 Years starting
City & Guilds
This is a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement designed for those working as teachers/trainers in England. You must have a teaching placement or teaching hours by September 1st. We are enrolling now.
This qualification combines the study of underpinning theories, frameworks and research into effective development of practical teaching strategies. It requires 8 observations and a minimum of 100 hours teaching practice over two years.
You will cover 9 units examining and developing aspects of teaching, learning and assessment in education and training, the application of theory to practice, developing equality and diversity in teaching, preparing to become a personal tutor, exploring wider professional practice, managing behaviour and developing resources.
The programme encourages you as a trainee to think independently and to engage with debates around education. One to one appointments with your tutor are a regular part of the course where there is opportunity to discuss your progress.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities. In order to prepare you for the demands of teaching there is a focus on developing English and maths.
This teacher training programme allows trainees to not only develop your teaching skills in the classroom but to improve aspects of your subject specialism with your peers. You will have the opportunities to work in groups, pairs and independently. You will be encouraged to discuss and refine features of your teaching in an informal and supportive environment allowing you to consider a variety of teaching strategies and resources which embed differentiation and inclusivity.
Delivery of units includes a blended learning approach through the development of creative classroom environments and tutorials. You ‘learn how to learn’ and adopt a variety of theories in order to apply strategies which support your own groups of learners.
Career Opportunities & Further Study
On completion of the Diploma you will be awarded a teaching qualification and are qualified to teach in the Lifelong Sectors including Further Education, Higher Education, Work-based Learning, Adult Community Centres and Libraries.
Teachers/Trainers will also be able to apply for Qualified Teaching and Learning Skills (QTLS) status with the Education and Training Foundation in order to have parity when working in schools.
Trainees will complete a variety of tasks including creating a teaching portfolio, producing written reports, lesson plans and reflective accounts as part of assignments.
Observations are planned with the trainee and both verbal and written feedback is given to enable you to reflect on your practice and develop the use of a variety of teaching strategies.
