If you complete year one successfully you can progress on to the second year which further develops your skills and knowledge, covering areas such as:

  • Dementia care and safe administration of medicines

This course will give you an opportunity to relate theory to practice across the sector through the completion of work placement.

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.

Course Highlights

This course gives you an opportunity to extend your interest and further develop your knowledge and skills in Health and Social Care.

The course provides a rich learning experience supported by visiting speakers from the sector and trips and visits together work placement activities. There are opportunities for you to visit a UCAS convention, Universities and Health and Social Care providers, as well as participate in external care competitions.

Related curriculum enrichment activities include First Aid Training.

You will be taught by a large expert team of staff with many years’ experience of working within the Health and Social Care sector.

Career Opportunities & Further Study

Upon successful completion of the first year of this course, you will have the opportunity to move directly into roles such as care work within a selection of different settings, working with children or continuing your studies with the Extended Diploma second year.

The full two year Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels and therefore carries UCAS points and supports entry to university on a degree level course.

Croydon College has its own University Centre Croydon providing excellent progression opportunities to the Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) Public Health and Social Care.

The course also provides the experience to help you gain employment in:

  • Care work as support or care workers
  • Advice centres
  • Support networks
  • Child based work, such as working within a Nursery.
  • Other Health and Social Care related work


The course is continuously assessed over the period of one or two academic year. You will complete a selection of three or four assignments for each unit taught. These will be graded internally and moderated externally.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grades 9-4/A*-C; or

A related Level 2 vocational course at Merit or higher (if a pass grade is achieved GCSE grades and/or functional skills results may also be considered); and

A GCSE at grade 9-4/A*-C (or equivalent) in English or Mathematics; or

English and Mathematics assessed at Level 1 or above by College assessment.

Mature applicants may be considered on relevant experience without having the required entry requirements. However, an interview will always be required.

Applicants will need to complete a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check once enrolled onto the course, which the College will pay for
