Mode of study:
This Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport is an ideal qualification for you if you are interested in all types of sport, fitness and exercise.
You will also be expected to work toward achieving GCSE C grades in English and mathematics, as well as having the opportunity to volunteer in an expansive range of wider college or community sporting activities.
Over the three terms you will study three different aspects of sport, preparing you appropriately for advanced study:
Term 1 – Applied Sports Science
- Fitness for sport and exercise
- Anatomy and physiology for sports performance
- Practical sports performance
- The sports performer in action
Term 2 – Sports in Society
- The mind and sports performance
- Leading sports activities
- Promotion and sponsorship in sport
- Running a sports event
Term 3 – Personal Fitness
- Lifestyle and well-being
- Training for personal fitness
- Injury and the sports performer
- Profiling sports performance
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE.

Career Opportunities & Further Study
The sports industry is vastly expanding and the need for experienced and qualified individuals is growing.
Therefore, this course is a brilliant stepping stone for the Advanced Apprenticeship – Sports Development, or our full time Level 3 Sports Diploma preparing students for university or employment in a wide range of sport related careers.
Most of the work that you will complete will be either written or practical, so developing your literacy skills are essential. You will also undertake two external assessments which your teacher(s) will help and prepare you for.
The majority of your practical activity will be out on the field through enrichment activities and specialist assessments.
Three GCSEs at grades 3/D; or
A related Level 1 vocational qualification; and
A GCSE at grade 3/D (or equivalent) in English; or
English and Mathematics assessed at Entry 3 or above by College assessment.
A satisfactory reference may also be requested.
This course is aimed at people who will be aged 16 or 18 at the start of the academic year.
