Course Overview

This one year practical vocational course is the equivalent of four GCSE grades A*-C and it will provide you with an interesting and stimulating approach to the study of science. This course covers a wide range of scientific disciplines and it is a good choice if you are interested in developing an understanding of science and how to solve scientific problems. It is made up a number of core and optional units.

As part of the course you will be able to undertake your own scientific research project as well as completing practical assessments. Other units in the course will cover aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, the environment, health and disease, and the universe.

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.

Course Highlights

Specialist Facilities:

This programme is delivered by our fully qualified and professional staff. You will benefit from learning in our modern, well-equipped laboratories in which numerous practical skills in electronic, microbiological, forensic, and physiological techniques are developed, as well as standard laboratory practices.

Trips and Activities:

You will have the opportunity to go on trips and visits as well as working with guest speakers from the industry and running mini projects. Examples of visits include trips to Ecology Centres to look at environmental management and working with external organisations with regard to planning a mini eco-project.

Guest speakers that have featured previously in the programme have included working forensic scientists, as a taster for one of the Level 3 pathways to which you can progress.

Employer Links:

A key distinguishing feature of the college is our links with employers and the ways in which we incorporate this into your learning. Employers attend our popular employability events and you can discuss Apprenticeships and progression opportunities in our Employability Hub or in the Apprenticeship Office.

Career Opportunities & Further Study

Completion of this course can lead to progression to higher level programmes, such as our Level 3 science course.

The technical and employability skills and the knowledge you gain on this course can also lead to employment in the science industry, such as technician roles in industrial or medical laboratories.

Future careers can include the following industries: scientific research, zoology, forensic science, crime scene investigation, radiography, and pharmacology.

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the year by a series of assignments and projects which include practical reports, scientific investigations, and presentations.

A large proportion of these assessments are based on practical investigations where a tutor observation is included in the final assessment.

There will be some external assessments in the core units and a practical assessment that combine with the course work in determining the final grade.
