Course Overview

This qualification aims to enable learners to gain a deeper understanding of mental health and well-being. This course is split into five manageable units which will provide you with a more comprehensive understanding around mental health but also the knowledge required to work in a variety of roles within both the mental health and social care sector. These units will cover the context of mental health and well-being and the promotion of it, associated issues and consequences with mental health problems, understanding mental ill health and working in mental health.

Course Highlights

Unit 1: Understanding the context of mental health and well-being

In this unit, your learners will look at current mental health legislation and how this has evolved over time. They will also study the social consequences of mental health problems and how professional approaches and practice to mental health problems have changed.

Unit 2: Promotion of mental health and well-being

This unit will introduce your learners to the factors that influence mental health and well-being at specific stages of a person’s life, from infancy through to late adulthood, with consideration on how the effects of adverse childhood experiences and economic, social and personal factors contribute to overall mental health and well-being. Learners will also study the current government strategy for supporting mental health in society.

Unit 3: Mental health problems: associated issues and consequences

Within this unit, your learners will go on to understand the effects that mental health problems have not only for an individual, but the impact they have on their families and society. The effects of substance and alcohol misuse and the links between these and mental health diagnosis is explored, along with the connections between mental health problems and offending. Learners will also explore the risk factors associated with suicide and self-harm. They will learn about the importance of non-judgemental approaches when dealing with someone who is affected by the associated issues and consequences explored in this unit.

Unit 4: Understanding mental ill health

In this unit, your learners will look at a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety and eating, mood, personality, sleeping and psychotic disorders, and dementia. Learners will also learn about the range of interventions and treatments available and the effects that these can have. At the end of this unit, learners will be able to explain the process of producing a person-centred mental health care plan and how the mental health worker can support recovery to those in care.

Unit 5: Working in mental health

In this unit, your learners will gain the knowledge and attitudes essential for those working in mental health services. Focusing on professional standards and codes of practice, combined with the mental health worker using reflective practice and identifying their own personal development plan, this unit will benefit those already working in mental health and those looking to work in the sector. The role of other professionals who provide mental health services is also covered, with an emphasis on how partnership working can improve outcomes for people with mental health problems.
