Mode of study:
Access to HE Diplomas are well established, national qualifications which allow students without traditional Level 3 qualifications to apply for degree courses and enter university.
Our Access to Science course runs over one year and is ideal if you wish to progress to university to study on a range of science related programmes. The diploma may also be a beneficial qualification if you are looking to go directly into employment, where Level 3 qualifications are required.
The structure of the course is separated into core study skills units and a selection of subject specific units that are equally split across the sciences. These include biology units that look at cells, biological systems, and the workings of the human body; chemistry units that study analytical chemistry and pharmacological techniques; and physics units focusing on motions and waves.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
There may be opportunities for adult students to study English and maths as part of your programme, and the level and type of qualification will be selected to suit individual need.
The staff on the programme are professionally qualified to a high standard and are both friendly and approachable. You will benefit from having a tutor who can provide not only academic support, but also pastoral advice and guidance when needed. One-to-one appointments with your tutor are a regular part of the course where there is opportunity to discuss your progress.
There is strong tutorial support on the course and our Employability Hub can assist with you application to Higher Education and preparing for your university interview.
The course is also delivered in well-equipped modern laboratories where numerous practical skills in physiological measurements, nutrient analysis, and analytical chemistry techniques are developed as well as standard laboratory practices.
Trips and Activities:
Throughout the Level 3 course there are a number of opportunities for you to go on trips and visits as well participate in working with guest speakers and running mini projects. These have included visits to university open days.
A key distinguishing feature of the college is our links with employers and the ways in which we incorporate this into your learning, with employers attending our popular employability events.
If you are 24 years old or over you might qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the course fees – see our Fees and funding page for more information.
Career Opportunities & Further Study
This Access Diploma will enable you to progress to a science related degree whereby you can secure a dynamic career that involves scientific study or investigation in biochemical engineering, marine biology, environmental engineering, food science, or pharmacology to name a few.
Our former students have progressed on to a wide variety of medical related and pharmacy related degrees, leading to employment within the health service industry and pharmacological sector.
You could also progress onto our University Centre Croydon BA (Hons) – Criminology, Psychology and Social Justice degree course which is validated by the University of Sussex.
You will be assessed throughout the course in a variety of ways, including practical reports, scientific investigations, and presentations where working independently is actively encouraged. A large proportion of these assessments are based on practical investigations where a tutor observation is included in the final assessment.
The course is wholly assignment based, with no exams.
All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics assessment, regardless of previous qualifications. You must achieve a Level 2 in English and a Level 2 in Mathematics to be accepted on this course.
