Mode of study:
This qualification is part of a programme of courses designed to enable you to develop your knowledge and skills and to work towards progressing to university once you have successfully passed the Level 3 Access course. It will give you a good grounding in academic studies and is designed to run over two days per week, usually from 9.30am – 3.00pm.
The course is divided into three key areas. The Access Level 1 course is designed to assist you with the development of Pre-GCSE maths and English skills. The IT units are designed to develop the skills necessary for successful study both on this Level 1 and the Level 2 Access courses and beyond. The Employability and Career Development unit is designed to encourage you to identify important factors in making career decisions and to enable you to engage effectively in the workplace.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
There may be opportunities for adult students to study English and maths as part of your programme, and the level and type of qualification will be selected to suit individual need.
The staff on the programme are professionally qualified to a high standard and are both friendly and approachable. You will benefit from having a tutor who can provide not only academic support, but also pastoral advice and guidance when needed. One-to-one appointments with your tutor are a regular part of the course where there is opportunity to discuss your progress.
Trips and Activities:
Within the Level 1 course there are a number of opportunities for you to go on trips as well as to participate in working with guest speakers and running projects. These have included working with the Safer Croydon Partnership Unit and the London Borough of Croydon looking at modern day slavery.
The enrichment activities of the course will be an outstanding element of your experience. Students have been involved in a number of UNICEF projects and have organised fundraising events for Macmillan Cancer Support and Operation Christmas Child.
All of these activities will further develop skills and support your progression to the next level.
A key distinguishing feature of the college is our links with employers and the ways in which we incorporate this into your learning, with employers attending our popular employability events.
Career Opportunities & Further Study
Once the year is complete, you can chose to progress on to our Level 2 Access to University course.
You will be assessed throughout this course by a variety of methods including assignments, role plays, case studies, presentations, leaflets, and projects.
You will produce both individual and group work that will be graded and all of your units will lead to an overall grade for the qualification.
All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics assessment, regardless of previous qualifications. You must achieve a Entry 3 in English and a Entry 2 in Mathematics to be accepted on this course.
