Course Overview

The Level 3 Access to HE Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) which is designed to provide preparation for study in higher education (HE) in the UK for adults returning to education.

The Access to HE Diploma (Medical Biosciences) offers adult returners a coherent, integrated and supported year of study through which they will gain the knowledge, awareness, skills and confidence necessary for successful undergraduate studying in the intended progression routes for this Diploma. The course aims to provide a balance of essential study skills with specialist subject knowledge to enable the students to be prepared for the academic and practical rigours of undergraduate study in Medical Biosciences.

This is a qualification designed for:

  • Adults who are interest in business or law as a professional career.
  • The Access to Business and Law Level 2 course is delivered over three days.
  • You will have the opportunity to study GCSE English/Maths or Functional Skills English/maths along side this course.

Transferable skills – ICT, academic writing, working in teams, time management, interview skills, CV development are embedded within the course

Career Opportunities & Further Study

Learners primarily progress to Higher Education study in areas related to Medical Biosciences. These may include some of the following areas of Degree level study: Adult Nursing, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedicine, Chemistry, Dental Hygiene, Diagnostic Radiography, Forensic Science, Health and Exercise Science, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Bioscience, Medical Physiology, Medical Sciences, Midwifery, Neuroscience, Nutrition, Ophthalmic Dispensing, Optometry, Pharmaceutical Science, Pharmacology and Physiology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiotherapy and Oncology, and Science and a wide range of combined and related degrees.

Learners who wish to progress onto a Medicine degree should consider studying the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine). The Medicine Diploma has been mapped to the QAA Medicine Subject Descriptor which was developed by The Medical Schools Council and defines the minimum requirement of content for a Diploma that is designed and publicly claims to provide the preparation needed for progression to undergraduate study in Medicine.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will be required to take an English and Mathematics BKSB assessment, regardless of previous qualifications.

You should have a GCSE grade 4 in English and/or maths. Alternatively, you must have a functional skills Level 2 qualification should your chosen university accept this. If you do not have GCSE English at grade 4 you will be asked to sit a short entry test. GCSE English could be studied alongside the Access to H.E. Diploma if necessary.

All applicants will be interviewed to ensure that the course is the right choice based on previous educational and work experience. Every student will need to provide at least one satisfactory reference to support their application.
